“I am researching my paternal grandmother's family, Shuttleworth, who lived in the village from 1800's. She was called Emma Murietta Shuttleworth who marrid Percy Drake, her father was John Shuttleworth who married Anne Atkinson, and his father was Henry who married Anne Stephenson. I believe his father's name could have been John and mother's name maybe Mary. Are there any Shuttleworth's left in the village and if so can you help. Thank you Rosemary Sharpe (nee Drake)”

“Rosemary pls. go to old Cowling photos search and put in "Shuttleworth" and see what comes up, then we will have some idea if you recognise any names. Also try Atkinson (was that an Atkinson of Copy Farm - High or Low Copy, Cowling?) Also pls. try Stephenson. Some of the Shuttleworths had the nickname of "Putty" due to them being painters and decorators, but we also had Shuttleworths "cloggers" too.
You never know what you will find?”

“Joan - Thanks for that info. I have looked but can't recognise any names except a Martha Shuttleworth on one old school photo, she could have been my grandmother's sister. My shuttleworth family all worked in the mills, they married farmers daughters, but my grt grandfather John had a brother James who was a farmer. Henry of 1821 married Ann Stephenson. It gives John Stephenson farmer as her father, and John Shuttleworth weaver as Henry's father on their marriage certificate in 1844. I have not been able to trace this particular John any further back living in Cowling. Henry's children to Ann were, John, James, Joseph, Christopher, Mary Ann & Susannah. some stayed in Cowling, others moved to Burnley, Colne area. I'll keep on searching.”

“I am still researching my Grandmothers family the Shuttleworths of Cowling. John & Ann Shuttleworth her parents had 12 children. He Grandparents Henry & Ann (Nee Stephenson) had 7 children. Henry's father is a John Shuttleworth, according to his marriage certificate in 1844. I can't trace this John any further back. However the whole family for three or more generations all lived in Cowling. Can anybody help?”
