“I have been reading this morning about the governments new plans to allow local councils to enforce 20mph speed limits in certain residential areas throughout the UK, and just wondered what people thought of reducing the speed limit in the village to 20mph. I think it could only be a good thing, both for improvement of safety as well as noise reduction, but do we think that our local council will implement this change in Cowling? And if they do, will they actually police it, as I feel that there are still far too many vehicles ignoring the speed limit in numerous areas of the village.”

“I think that it may be difficult to justify reducing the speed limit on what is effectively a trunk road to 20mph.

You are right that enforcement is the issue. IF the powers that be could more effectively enforce/police the existing 30mph zone - then people would be a lot happier.

We all know that there is speeding through the village. How many people have been given a speeding ticket on Keighley Road, Cowling in the last 12 months? My guess would be zero.”

“Just wondering are either of you drivers?”

“In response to Martin, no, I personally am not a driver currently, but I did not feel that would be a pre-requisite to having an opinion. I feel a reduced, and legitimately policed speed limited running through the village, would be of benefit to both drivers and pedestrians”

“How many people ignor the 20 mph speed limit in Crosshills?
Is that stretch ever policed, even though it is literally yards away from the station?
Enforcement is the key to Cowlings speeding driver problem, but if the powers that be cant/wont/are unable to enforce the law on their own doorstep, what chance have we?
So sorry all... speeding drivers, unfortunately, will carry on speeding through Cowling, knowing damn well they will get away with it.”

“If ever there was a case for speed cameras in a village it's here. Has the council ever discussed this? After all, a fatality is no longer a prerequisite to having these installed....though I suspect that a "history of accidents due to excessive speed" may well be. Nobody likes the cars that go through at over 30mph but when was the last accident in the village? Has there been one in say the past ten years? Council policy nationwide is to put in cameras only where accidents have occurred.
Spain has a great system btw. If you speed into many villages or towns, within a few metres the traffic light immediately goes red against you. And stays red for a long time, just to make its point! A pity we can't have that here!”

“Greywolf, there are no speed cameras in North Yorkshire & are probably unlikely to be even though we have some of the most dangerous roads in the country. Most accidents happen just outside the village on the bends, where there were two fatal accidents about two years ago. The last accident I know of in the village involved the school bus (empty thank goodness) & a lorry in the dip just past Winkholme. Unless traffic calming measures are put in place, unfortunately we will never stop the speeding.”

“I am also very concerned about the stretch of road past the moss just outside of cowling - I live near here and watch cars overtake on the bend and also as they are heading towards the hill at the moss - there have been many crashes here (one only the other week) some have been fatal - I think something needs to be done here wether it be a reduced speed limit/ bollards in the middle of the road/ speed cameras - its terrifying turning left or right out of the end of reedshaw road for fear of crazy drivers overtaking at speed - who do I speak to about this? most people who live here share my concerns”
