“Did anyone else see the article in the new issue of the NY times 'Could yours be the village of the year'? Apparently, this year it is villages in Craven that can enter the competition sponsored by Calor and they are not just looking for the nicest flowers or best window boxes but the competition "looks at the community as a whole. There is so much going on nowadays in terms of young people's activities, self-help social occasions, parish plans, care and support arrangements, environmental and sports projects, newsletters, websites or links with business that most villages could put in a competitive entry" [Philip Lawson of Rural Action Yorkshire, as quoted in the article]. I had a little look at the entry form and found it really interesting because it made me aware of lots of activities/ links in the village that may otherwise get overlooked. I think Cowling would stand a chance (and £1000/ £500 prize money would come in handy) - what do you think?

The deadline is 15th May 2009 and the entry form can be found on www.ruralyorkshire.org.uk

“Yes, do "HOPE" Cowling would stand a chance, why not- if everyone got their act together, but that does mean "everyone" and public places too! Can just about remember Coronation decorations 1953 when someone painted their garden railings red, white and blue!”

“I think this is a great idea, we may not be a twee village but it has character, and a thriving array of user groups that could contribute. Off the top of my head there's Pin Prod, Cowling Companions, Youth Group, Toddlers and Playgroup, Village Hall Reps, Shooting Club, Book Club. It's worth a go!”

“I think this would be a good idea and I am prepared to assist in completing the application if needed. It would be good to look at the positives and hopefully gain an incentive to improve.”

“I came here in the seventies and left then a few years later moved back because i missed it , its a great place to live , although a few things have changed for the worse, nobody works here and most shops have closed, it still has more to it than a lot of other places, a superb setting for one, how many people were up by the pinnacle on sunday, loads, a better view than some places in the dales. Well done Kirsten for getting this going and not only that , the newsletter is the best its ever been with you as editor, you're a credit to the village.”
