When Ridge Mill Bridge was demolished by a falling tree a couple of years ago, I did suggest to North Yorks c c that it was an avoidable accident - the dangerous tree ought to have been removed prior to it's fall. They seemed unimpressed with my point. The bridge upstream from it (Berry Bottoms?, Gibb Syke? not sure of name) has very recently been replaced by a much better, wider, bridge....but...I'm surprised (or maybe not) to see that a tree leaning over it has NOT been removed, so just the same thing could happen to this new bridge as did to Ridge Mill. Much as I like trees they need to be taken out if they are threatening infrastructure like bridges. It's so very expensive to replace a bridge, and wasteful not to ensure that it won't be damaged by falling trees.

Cowling Parish Council Village Survey June 2010

The parishioners of Cowling were asked, via a questionnaire in the newsletter, what they would like to see happen to the greenfield site, which lies to the south west of the Acre Mill development.

The voting forms were returned to a ballot box in the FM Café and this was unlocked at the July parish council meeting by our County Councillor. Many residents posted their forms directly to the parish clerk, actually paying the postage themselves.

The questionnaire asked if residents wanted affordable housing on this greenfield site in Cowling It also asked for the residents wishes for the site should they not want to see affordable homes on the site.

The response was 222 votes; 100 by post and 122 in the box. Some people had also provided comments to clarify their views.

These are the results:

Want affordable homes 9 (3 did not want them on this greenfield site)
Do not want affordable homes 213

Want allotments 94
Want other 1 (playground)
Want site to remain greenfield 118

Summary (rounded to nearest percent):

3% want affordable homes on the greenfield site
1% want affordable homes elsewhere in the village

96% do not want affordable homes in Cowling at all. Of these:

42% want allotments on the site
53% want the site to remain as greenfield
1% want the site to become a playground or amenity site

Some examples of comments which appeared on the forms:

“I would love to grow my own fruit and veg.”
“Plenty of houses to buy or rent in Cowling without building any more”
“I have my name on the waiting list for allotments but have been told I will be dead before I get one”
“There is no need for any more houses in the village as there are dozens for sale”
“I am a disabled lady with my husband and grandchild…I need a bungalow to live in”
“Suggest homes for single people, couples, house share – then families”
“There is a need for jobs rather than affordable housing”
“Please, please, please can we have more allotments!”
“Please can we have an allotment. Pretty please!”
“I do believe there should be affordable housing in oure village but not using Greenfield sites”
“There are many terraced houses for sale in Cowling all very reasonably priced, they are not selling, why would anyone feel a need for more houses to be built??”

A few longer comments wanted to see bungalows for pensioners in the village but not on greenfield sites.
The Parish Council has informed Craven District Council of the result of this survey, and will discuss it at the next Parish Council meeting.

LOST: V. battered well-worn book "Cowling a Moorland Parish" printed 1980 - inside is written "To Lisa, from Mum and Dad Christmas 1980". This might have been lost at the village hall 125 yrs. event on Sat. 10th April and I did bring a lot of books, scrapbooks, photos, etc. Not turned up as yet though, and v. sentimental value.
Thanks, Joan M. Tindale

Congratulations on Cowling Cricket Club on reaching its 100th birthday. I would just like to say that I was really impressed with the courteous and professional manner in which the club's celebrations were carried out. Firstly all those living in close proximity to the cricket ground had a hand delivered letter informing us about the celebrations on Saturday. Secondly the event seemed to be so well organised and noise and disruption were kept to a minimum. Well done to all who organised the event and who attended. The marquee as really impressive. Best wishes for the next 100 years!

Never ming Englands game yesterday, British bulldog fighting spirit has to go to my boys today with their cricket match against Wilsden. They dug deep, never gave up and when it looked like we were going to loose needing 17 runs off the last over along came my heros
Jodie getting a single run off the first ball giving Ollie strike and the boy hit 4 consecutive 4's winning the match with one ball remaining. I am so very proud of you all.Man of the match was given to Ollie but you all deserved it today because you all played a part in the victory. GO COWLING :)

I have a male rabbit in need of a new home. Unfortunatly he does not get on with my own rabbit. He is called whiskey and is grey, he is fairly tame. I do not have a cage for him as my own rabbit uses it but you can come by them pretty cheap. I would be looking forsome one who would be able to let him out alot to ensure he has a lot of exercise or even better someone who would let him have full run of a garden. If your interested or you have any questions please contact me on 07962394021. Thanks

The above is a link to the photo on this web, in," Digital Cowlingweb", which shows the damage done to the once Bilberry covered land in front of the Pinnacle. The damage was done by motorcross bikes.
A few weeks ago I met someone who was riding a motorbike just below the Plinnacle, ( Cowling side,) when I said to him that I thought motorbikes had been banned, he said that only motorcross bikes had been banned and that trials bikes like his and that of his two companions were allowed.
Surely any motorised motorbike would still damage the land even if they stayed just below the crag which is what they said they were doing?

PRAM RACE SOUVENIRS: The first Pram Race in aid of Muscular Dystrophy was held in November 1974, and in May 1975 an inscribed silver salver was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Clues of the Bay Horse by Richard Attenborough. In 1976 a silver rose bowl and tankard were also presented by Anita Harris. We have got the press cuttings/photos of both these occasions. If anyone knows the whereabouts of these souvenirs, please contact either Joan Tindale (Joan@Cowlingweb or Moonrakers, or Mark Barnes Chairman of Moonrakers/Mark@Moonrakers.) Thanks.

Cowling U13 won their first league match of the season on Sunday against Embsay.
Having lost the toss and fielding first they put on a fantastic display to end Embsays innings on 62 all out. Sam Solley ( man of the match) bowled 3 overs and got 5 wickets for the loss of only 5 runs, following this with a great batting performance retireing on 26 runs not out. The match was won when George Blackwell got the winning run. This was followed by a pitch invasion when a delighted team celebrated their win.
I am so proud of you all boys, you bonded well, and gave me what i asked for, a tight mature performance. James Mellin now the captain motivated his players and did a great job. Keep this up boys and there will be many more wins to come.
We have a cup match this week at home, hopefully friday but i will let everyone know when i get confirmation.

My 14yr old son is doing his bronze Duke of Edinburgh award at the moment, but is struggling to find anywhere to do his 'volunteering' section in Cowling. We have been down to the Cafe and to Drystone radio, but nothing seems to have come of it yet. Does anyone know of any other opportunities within the village? - perhaps you know someone elderly who needs a bit of gardening or shopping doing (he only needs to do an hour or so a week, for a few months initially). Hope you can help.

So sorry to see that the cafe was shut yesterday morning and to hear that the lovely Bradley has lost his job there....he made a mean bacon buttie!! A group of friends have been meeting there every Tuesday morning to try to support the venture and we're really disapointed that it's not taken off...it's the cheapest coffee for miles around, free wifi and they do really good, cheap food!

Hello all Cowlingwebbers!- I have been here before, a good while ago, but due to computer failings and time constraints (no, I've not been "inside" ! ! !)-I have not been able to follow on from what I gained last time... I am searching for relations or info on family names of Beedom or Shuttleworth from your area. The young lady sat in the back of the car in the "Middleton Outing" photo is very definitely my Grandmother (also Bertha -I have a picture of her a bit older) so it seems I'm on the right track..but there were so many Shuttleworths ...!!
I did previously receive a very positive reply from a lady called Josie, but was unable to reply before all the computer problems.
Here are a few names that may jog memories perhaps???
Bertha married William Robert Beedom -they lived at 8 Milligan's Field,Crosshills c. 1920 Sons; Robert , Jack, Dougie, Maurice
Daughters;Betty (Elizabeth) Gladys May.
Betty married John Hardacre fom Colne- they ran the post office in Bradley village in the1960's - Robert and Jack both moved to Halifax with their Dad as , I believe, Bertha died when she was still young (in about 1938, I think)
I have some recollection of Maurice moving to Doncaster...
I would love to hear from anyone who can fill in any of the spaces..... Thanks!

According to my research a wolf can live in many places-i.e.swampy areas, deserts, arctic areas and tundras. No mention of Cowling - so who is the articulate Greywolf then? Or does he /she just live hidden away like real wolves pounce on this `site to stir things up a bit.? One has to realise that in order for survival one has to be adaptable to change and this is precisely what Cowling has done over the past 30 years. So is Greywolf a valid name for this `site or not?

Last night (Tues) I was listing some books on E-bay for my wife which included the following book which I found very interesting, in connection with Cowling Village.
Does anyone know anything about Rev George Bayldon or his little book other than what's listed below? I see that he is listed on the Anglican Church Section of this website, as the second vicar of Holy Trinity, Cowling 1849-94.
ANNALS OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH IN METRE (POETIC WRITING)
A rare book written from the parish of Cowling near Keighley in the Craven district of Yorkshire, in the year 1852. The Rev George Bayldon was Vicar of Cowling from 1849 to 1894 and was very much involved with the Temperence Movement in the village. He was the man to whom the boys of the village would go to sign the pledge of "Teetotal." Mr Bayldon was also a favourite with young boys who liked to fly kites, as he was at one time, the only person in the village to take a daily newspaper, from which they would make their kites.
This book contains 316 pages.
A history of the church from the Apostolic period to the Reformation, written in Metre, and describing errors of the Roman Catholic Church which had later been introduced. An unusual, rare and collectable little book.
Publisher: Rouse and Co. London 1852
