Welcome to the Cowlingweb message board.
http://www.digital.cowlingweb.co.uk/gallery/displayimage.asp?imageID=4805 The above is a link to the photo on this web, in," Digital Cowlingweb", which shows the damage done to the once Bilberry covered land in front of the Pinnacle. The damage was done by motorcross bikes. A few weeks ago I met someone who was riding a motorbike just below the Plinnacle, ( Cowling side,) when I said to him that I thought motorbikes had been banned, he said that only motorcross bikes had been banned and that trials bikes like his and that of his two companions were allowed. Surely any motorised motorbike would still damage the land even if they stayed just below the crag which is what they said they were doing?

I received this from the North Yorkshire's Neighbourhood Watch / Police Community Messaging Service, and thought it was worth sharing here : "There has been an incident in craven whereby a resident has received a phonecall from a female who stated she was from Craven Housing saying that Craven housing would no longer be paying there rent by cash, but would pay it by cheque if the resident gave there bank details. The resident was a private home owner. Craven housing have no knowledge of this, Please do not pass any bank information if you receive a call similar to this."

Today, Thurs 11th. March 2010, a well dressed gent, (5’10”,approx, dark, full length wool coat, short cropped hair,) called at Middleton. He had an Npower badge on his right lapel and a clip board in his hand. He said, " Do you want to waterproof tipex?" No, this is not a wind up. His responses were the same each time I said, " Pardon, what did you say?" He then proceeded, in what resembled an east European accent to ask me something or whatever ,for I could not understand a word he was saying. I asked my neighbour what he had said to her and she said, " He said ' Would you like to safe £ 250?' and then said,' Can I come inside?'" To that, my neighbour, not being a numpty said, " No. Certainly not." I have reported this to the Police 0845 6060 247, ( it has just changed, that is why it is different to the number on this site --- webmaster notified,) and an officer came round saying that he was having a look round the village but at that point he had not seen him. The caller may have been genuine, if so, it’s obvious that the ability to speak comprehensible English is not a prerequisite for working for Npower. I tried to contact Npower but can't via the web, and the phone number was engaged.

Does anyone know of any rooms to let or flats to rent in cowling. Im looking to move up to the village as my brother, his wife and nephews live here. I am relocating from Warrington (cheshire) to be closer to them. I have been looking for a while now but without success. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thankyou in advance for anyone who takes the time to answer.

I was just looking at some old Cowling Photos of a family by the name of Shuttleworth. In my family tree there is a brother of my ancestor James Hindle named John Hindle born 1816 at Cowling, married on 18.12.1836 at Kildwick to Mary Shuttleworth and they had a son Joseph Hindle on 20.12.1837, bapt. 25.6.1837 at Ickornshaw Methodist. They were at Sun Street, Keighley in 1851 and Joseph was 14 years old and he had a sister Isabella Hindle. Would anyone know of this family or of any Shuttleworthis connected to them from Cowling? If so, peased to hear from you of how they are connected, if you have Mary Shuttleworth in your own family tree. Kindest regards, Derek Hindle in Tasmania.Australia.

Wonder if anyone has any photos of the pulling down of Providence Place at Winkholme Top- possibly around 1965, the same time as the Bar Chapel was demolished. I can't remember anything about it. We already have a photo of Providence Place 1947 in old photos gallery. Two houses on right hand side still remain.

I would like to thank the couple who had two dogs. One was off a lead when i approched them on my horse. The gentlemen called his dog back and struggled to put it on a lead. He struggled to control it as i past him, saying (" he has never seen a horse before"). He has then let the dog off again, When i got back from riding i found my duck laid in the gateway, feathers all over and dog prints all around her. He will be happy to know she has now died. Please if you are in the country keep your dogs under control and near you. There isn't just ducks around, It is also Lambing season as well. We try and save animals then you get someone like this around. Thanks

The Hartley Memorial Field (in front of Pinnacle View) is not a dog toilet! It was donated to the village in memory of John Hartley who was killed in WW1 by his family. There are 2 dog bins quite near, and it is very obvious that a large dog is doing it there very often, like several others. This is surely unfair to the rest of the more responsible dog owners who do pick it up anyway.

SEEKING INFORMATION Does anyone have information relating to the families of James Watson, Born 18.4.1818 and who died on 15.12.1885 and his first wife Martha (maiden name not known) who died on 14.8.1854, aged 38. James subsequently married twice more following the death of Martha. I am descended from James and Martha through their eldest son Robert. James was a grocer and draper in Cowling. Any information relating to the family of James and Martha would be very much appreciated.

Hello Folks, Happy New Year to all. I was just reading about the Watsons of Cowling and it reminded me of some unfinished research I was doing last year before I had a stint in hospital. My ancestor James Hindle, married to Jane Thornton in 1842 had a sister Grace Hindle married to James Watson on 21.3.1836. The parents of James and Grace Hindle were James Hindle born 19.11.1791 at Cowling, married to Sarah Smith on 19.4.1813 at Kildwick. This James Hindle's parents were James Hindle bapt.2.3. 1760 at Colne, married to Rebecca Hopkinson on 18.1.1781 at Kildwick, he lived at Davy Hill from 1810. He was the son of John Hindle of Davy Hill, Cowling from 1773, rented from John Currer. This John Hindle was married on 15.10.1751 to Mercy Rhodes at Kildwick. Mr Lang's valuationof Mrs Watson's Estate at Davy Hill in Cowling in 1773, (says) in occupation of John Hindle. I am very curious as to whether the James Watson, who married Grace Hindle in 1836 was connected in any way to this Mrs Watson mentioned. If there is anyone who has any ideas on this subject, pleased to hear from you.I think that James Watson could have been the son of Robert Watson and Margaret Snowden , married 15.9.1806 at Carleton in Craven. Do you think this is correct? Pleased to hear if anyone can solve this puzzle. Kindest regards, Derek Hindle in Tasmania, Australia.

Cowling visited a vastly improved Pendle Forest on Sunday 14th February, who have strenghtened their side considerably since the last league meeting and were fortunate to come away with a 1-1 draw. Playing by no means at their best, Cowling huffed and puffed their way through the game. While perhaps having territorial advantage Cowling never really tested the Forest keeper and left themselves open to the counter attack. Where as the week before Cowlings movement and crisp passing were good, this week it was non existent, their communication was also not very good. Half time was reached with the game scoreless. The most disappointing aspect was Cowling seemed more interested with disputing the referee's decision's than improving their performance. Against the run of play Cowling took the lead with 10 mins to go, but couldn't hold out for the win as they consided a penalty with 5 mins left and could easily have lost the game when with 3 mins to go the Cowling keeper Oren Jeanes pulled off a fantastic save. Not a performance to remember, but at least they didn'y loose. Scorer was Ellis Denton and Man of the Match with a stupendous display in goal was Oren Jeanes.

RECYCLING: Well I am trying - have only filled blue bin about one quarter in 3 weeks! Washing everything out - extra water needed. Having water meter removed soon - costing as much, if not more- for 2 persons haha! Green Bin - about half full in one week. Brown Bin - full now due to cutting bushes down -no cauliflower leaves will ever be going in that again - horrid smell in freezing cold weather, so would be even worse in summer. And what do you do with peelings wrapped in newspaper? Seen that my Dad has put his cardboard milk cartons in his blue bin? What a farse?

Cowling travelled to play Fulledge Colts on Sunday 7th February and came away with a victory that saw them climb to the top of the league. Dominating the first half, Cowlings quick accurate passing and intelligent movement saw Fulledge at full stretch to try and keep them out. Cowling turned the pressure they applied into goals and were 4-0 up at halftime. Fulledge came more into the game in the second half, but Cowling could have increased their lead, but as it was the fianl score was 4-0. A performance enjoyed by both players and spectators of Cowling. Scorers were Jacob Hough with 2 goals and Ellis Denton and Jordan Halstead with one each. Mn of the match with a majestic midfield display was Ellis Denton.

Free To Collect - Does anyone wear soft contact lenses and use Baush & Lomb EasySept one step solution? I have to give away an unopened bottle of this with an unused lens case and I don't want to throw it away as it cost over five pounds. I have thrown away the box but the bottle and lens case are unopened. I have changed my lenses from monthlies to dailies so don't need it. It's suitable for all soft contact lens wearers and suitable for sensitive eyes. Just reply if you can use it with your email or number and it's yours. Cheers, Denise

I feel the fact that some dog walkers are picking it up and putting it in any bin should be seen as a positive, i also had to play dodge the dirt on a recent outing with my son in his pushchair and have made many telephone calls to the dog warden, but the dark nights and recent terrible weather have all contributed to lazy dog owners!
