Jefferys Old Roads -
Cowling & Keighley
Dated: 1771
Supplied By: Dr John Laycock.
Points to note:
The
canal is present.
The railway is
absent.
The modern roads in
the valley bottoms
do not exist. Roads
tended to be on the
well-drained
hillsides above the
flood plain.
The Aire valley
route north from
Keighley goes up
onto the hills above
Utley before
dropping down
Steeton Bank. It
loops north around
what is now the
North side of the
hospital emerging up
Lyons Lane to
Eastburn bridge.
The road goes up
into Cross Hills,
there is no
short-cut to
Kildwick.
The road from
Kildwick to Skipton
is via Farnhill and
Bradley, on the
hillside.
The road to Cowling
goes North of the
beck via Malsis to
Cowling Hill.
The road from
Steeton to Silsden
crosses the river
just to the West of
the beck behind
Steeton Hall. This
is nearer Kildwick
than the current
bridge.
The old link to
Lancanshire is shown
from Oakworth across
to Laneshaw Bridge.
Many of the farms
are not in
existence.
The old (more
phonetic) spelling
of the places is
present, rather than
the ‘tided-up’ names
imposed by the
Ordnance survey
Oxford/Cambridge
graduates!
