“please forward to everyone.
I have authorised through the councils scheme of delegation section C(2) grants to officers and the ward representative for the temporary road closure on the A6068 from 12.10 until 13.00 on 26th July 2008 to enable the gala procession to take place, please tell everyone there will be a procession and unfortunately I wont be there as am on holiday. Sorry if this appears to over ride anyones decisions but I felt it my duty to keep a tradition alive and kicking, this is essential to our community and part of our history, culture and also the future of our Gala and Procession. Please make it a day to remember and to maybe learn lessons from for the future that with a little effort we can keep Cowling Gala the pleasure it has always given many people including myself. Everyone who can please enter the procession no matter what the theme for the day is, maybe you have a vintage bike or car, an old costume from previous Gala's, anything to add to the day.
regards
Craven District Councillor

“I discovered your website by chance and was immediately impressed by its usefulness as a fantastic source of all things connected with the village and the area. My great grandfather comes from Cowling and your site has given me lots to ponder on the family history. I have had great assistance from Josie Walsh, a mine of Cowling information and an authority on Cowling ancestry. Many thanks to all.”

“My great, great grandfather was Christopher Benson born 29 Aug 1833 in Cowling. His son Samuel b. 1864 married and moved to Blackburn, Lancs and then he emigrated (without his wife!!) to Canada. There my dad lost track of him after WW2. However I see there are still Bensons in Cowling - I would be interested if anyone has any more information about Christopher, I think the 1901 census saw him working as an Estate Bailiff at the Manor House in Over Silton. The Cowling website's a treasure trove for family history but there must be lots more Bensons that I don't know about!”

“We are in the process of converting the diarys of Emmett (from 1873---)to DVD. These are a fascinatig insight of a farming life in days long past. They give many details of the farming community from these times and the hard life they lived. It also mentions many of the local people including their passing as he was also the grave digger as well as a local farmer. Many of the local towns and villages are also mentioned. Anyone interested in the local field names would also be interested.”

“My maiden name is "Watson" and my grandfather was John William Watson who married Ann Procter and went to live in Colne. John was a member of the cycling club and I have a photo of him with his bycicle taken in a studio just before the turn of the century, I think. If you would like me to send it will you please send me an Email address. John was a joiner by trade and the yougest child of Robert & Ellen. I have found a lot of interesting information on this site as my family have lived Cowling for many generations. In fact, William and James Watson who kept the Bay Horse are also my direct ancestors, so thanks to Lizzie too. PS My brother is Peter Watson who has the Garage in Otley Road at Skipton. Some of you may know him and his son, Robert.”

“I've just spent a fascinating hour or so looking through the old photographs, hoping to pick out one or two of the boys from Cowling who attended Keighley Boys Grammar School with me. [I lived in Sutton] I think I might have found just one. He's pictured in the middle of the front row of the photo of the C of E Sunday School trip dated 1946. I think it could be Ronald Robert Burgess. Am I correct? Camera film must have been very hard to come by shortly after the war because photos of that era are few and far between. I knew of three other lads from Cowling who started KBGS in 1945 - Malcolm Smith, Peter? Whittaker and Trevor[Squire] Jackson. And was there a Manton too?
Just a point. Would it be possible to number the pages ? It would make it easier to bookmark a particular photo.

“A great Site!
My ggrandfather William Harrison left Leys farm Cowling in 1850 to sail for Port Phillip Melbourne Australia. Two marriages and 18 children later he told his descendants of this lovely place in Yorkshire called Cowling where he grew up as a cattle farmers son
Subsequent family history research in Oz has reaqainted this far off family with this lovely place called Cowling. Several of William's contemporary descendants have traveled from Oz to Cowling to savour the pleasures of their distant ancestors birthplace
The Harrison's were spread across the Craven areas and are certainly concentrated at the Broughton in Craven All Saints Church
A great Website and Cowling, a lovely area to know your ancestors were living in!!
